Preclearance Ecological Surveys

Project: Santos GLNG Project, Saipem Australia Pty Ltd
April 2012 – April 2013

Ausecology remains the only company that has traversed the full 420km of the GLNG gas transmission pipeline route from the Fairview gas fields east of Injune to Curtis Island off the coast at Gladstone. Ausecology’s specialised ecology field teams, led by our federally-approved Senior Botanist and Senior Ecologist, have successfully delivered the pre-clearance surveys focusing on:

  • Identification of threatened flora and fauna species under both the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) and the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (NC Act).
  • Identification of threatened ecological communities and migratory species under the EPBC Act.
  • Verification and ground-truthing of Endangered and Of Concern Regional Ecosystems (RE’s) and High Value Regrowth.
  • Ground truthing of category A, B and C Environmentally Sensitive Areas (ESAs) under the Environmental Protection Act 1994.
  • Assess the type and ecological value of vegetation not classified as being remnant or High Value Regrowth vegetation by DEHP.
  • Identification of declared pest species (Land Protection Act and Weeds of National Significance).
  • Opportunistic observations of fauna, fuana habitat and evidence of fauna activity.
  • Quantification for clearance permits, translocations and/or offsetting purposes of all EVNT and Type A species using direct count, quadrat and transect methodologies.
  • Map of areas of disturbance.
  • Assessment of wetlands, springs, watercourses and ephemeral creeks.
  • Identification of pest species (including both flora and fauna).

Ausecology prides itself on their high standard of ecological reporting and mapping having produced highly detailed and practical ecology reports and over 2,000 flora, fauna and habitat feature maps at a scale of 1:1,000, enabling construction teams and Environmental Compliance teams to meet their obligations under the Approval Conditions granted under PPLs 166, 167 and 168.
