Life next to Brisbane’s busiest roads

Over the past 18 months, Ausecology has been working with Lendlease on the Gateway Upgrade North project and the Kingsford Smith Drive upgrade, both in Brisbane.

Ausecology undertook the pre-clearance ecology surveys for both projects and has been providing fauna spotter catcher services during the construction works.

During this 18 month period, the Ausecology fauna spotter catcher team has encountered over 1,500 animals (across 88 different species) living within close proximity to these busy roads. Animals have included frogs, snakes, lizards, possums, bandicoots, gliders and birds which have been relocated to safety. Interestingly, the team also found a small population of yolk-bellied snake-skinks (Ophioscincus ophioscincus) and blind snakes (Anilios wiedii).

These have been interesting projects to be a part of and the team is enjoying working with Lendlease; a company with a high regard for the environment and empathy for wildlife.

We are proud to say 18 months on that it is not just our spotter catchers who are looking out for wildlife; we find that everyone on site now looks out for and reports wildlife. Some team members have even come to appreciate snakes!
