Project: Restoring ecosystems across south-east Queensland
Client: Healthy Land & Water
2021 – Ongoing
Healthy Land & Water (HLW) is an independent not-for-profit which manages catchments across south-east Queensland. Management includes weed control, planting, and creek line rehabilitation to restore the region’s diverse ecosystems and protect biodiversity. Notably, HLW has ongoing programs in the Lockyer Valley Region, restoring catchments damaged by floodwaters and improving riparian and marine habitats. HLW works alongside Traditional Owners, landholders, community groups, governments, councils, and industry to design and deliver nature-based projects.
Project scope
Ausecology has worked with Healthy Land & Water since 2021 on a variety of projects across SEQ managing riverways and restoring habitats.
Ausecology initially provided weed control services to HLW and have grown to provide a range of planting and rehabilitation management services as well. To support HLW, Ausecology draws on our extensive experience in riparian ecology establishment and management, as well as our advanced mapping systems and thorough safety procedures.
Notable projects include control for Celtis sinensis (Chinese celtis) along the Brisbane River, as well as a planting of over 4,200 trees at Laidley Creek in the Lockyer Valley Region.
Transforming landscapes
Over the past 5 years, Ausecology’s strategic and practical solutions have put over 12,000 trees in the ground across 6 projects throughout SEQ. Ausecology leveraged our relationships with several local nurseries as well as our internal skills and experience to deliver projects with efficiency and reliability while achieving quick establishment, high diversity, and long-term impacts. Ausecology played a pivotal role in the multi-year collaborative Laidley Creek restoration project which involved rehabilitating, planting, and maintaining approximately a 1km stretch of damaged creek bank.
Pragmatic weed management
Ausecology have also employed a variety of weed control techniques across 105 hectares of council and private properties to support developing and established habitats. Ausecology’s planting and weed control project management is backed by science and informed by our ecology experience to provide measurable results.
Safety committed
Ausecology’s advanced safety procedures has allowed our teams to work confidently through challenging riparian terrain with limited access, including from boats, on banks in proximity to deep water bodies, and moving equipment and personnel between the two. Ausecology’s real-time risk management systems, combined with our In-Vehicle Monitoring Software (IVMS) provides HLW with reassurance when operating under strict safety policies and regulatory requirements.
