Warmer weather is here. What are our teams up to?
We’ve had another successful burn season with prescribed ecological burns performed across over 3,800 hectares at the offset sites we manage across Queensland.
Controlled burns are used to manage fuel loads and promote ecological processes across our offset sites and form a big part of our management services, however they are kept to the colder and wetter months of the year when the weather is most suitable.
While the Ausecology crews are hanging up our fire jackets for the next couple of months, our teams are as busy as ever as spring arrives. So, what have we got planned?
Spring surveys
As many flora and fauna species become more active during spring, now is the perfect time to start surveying. Our ecologists are already out in the field setting camera traps, checking nest boxes, and counting plants. Flora and fauna surveys are critical to environmental management as from them we can infer the health of an ecosystem, as well as the effectiveness of past management actions.
Weed control
Along with native plants, many invasive flora species become more active during spring which, for many, is the best time to commence weed management plans. As well as being easier to identify and target, many weed species are more vulnerable to herbicide treatments during growing periods, making spring a critical window for most weed treatment plans. Removing weeds during growing periods also gives our native flora and fauna the best chance to flourish and out-compete invasive species, creating a healthier and more resilient ecosystem.
Fire break construction and maintenance
Controlled burns and fuel load management is only one of many techniques Ausecology employs to minimise wildfire risks. And as we move into the hotter, drier months, wildfire risks are at their maximum. Planning, constructing, and maintaining networks of fire breaks across offsets is critical, and Ausecology knows first-hand how crucial having properly designed and implemented fire breaks are.
